Bligo Tunnel Outlet

Terowongan Kambiwolu Selokan Mataram, widely known as the Bligo Tunnel, is a historic underground water siphon located in Ngluwar, Magelang Regency.

Sourced from the Progo River via the Bendung Karangtalun, this engineering landmark stretches roughly 979 meters underground. Built between 1942 and 1944 under Japanese occupation, the tunnel’s construction was masterminded by Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono IX as a strategic initiative to shield thousands of local citizens from brutal forced labor (romusha).

Even today, the functional outlet channels crucial irrigation water via the Selokan Mataram and the Selokan Van der Wijck to vast agricultural areas in Sleman Regency and Bantul Regency.
