The Bekas Persimpangan Rel Bantul refers to the historical remains of the Yogyakarta-Srandakan-Sewugalur railway line. This historic tram network was constructed during the colonial period of the Dutch East Indies.
This small level crossing was built around 1912 by the private Dutch company Nederlandsch-Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij (NIS). The route served primarily as an economic backbone for the transport of sugarcane and agricultural products from various sugar factories in the south of Yogyakarta.
Most of the tracks crossing the main roads in Bantul are now buried deep beneath layers of asphalt, yet they remain visible if you look closely. Just a stone’s throw from this site, you will find further remnants of the past: Eks Signal Beteng.
