The Collapse of Jembatan Srandakan Lama
Jembatan Srandakan Lama (the Old Srandakan Bridget) in Brosot, Bantul Regency, Yogyakarta, tragically collapsed in the night of February 6, 2025. This historic bridge, which had stood for nearly a century, succumbed to the relentless forces of nature and time.
Originally constructed in 1925, Jembatan Srandakan Lama was initially a railway bridge before being converted into a road bridge in 1951. Over the years, it became an essential part of the local infrastructure, connecting communities across the Progo River. However, the bridge’s age and the constant erosion caused by the river’s strong currents took their toll.
The collapse occurred when a 25-meter section of the bridge gave way, primarily due to the erosion of the riverbed and the failure of the dam or groundsill supporting the structure. Fortunately, there were no casualties or injuries reported, as the bridge had already been closed to traffic due to its deteriorating condition.
Local authorities, including the Bantul Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), have confirmed that the bridge will not be repaired. Instead, efforts will focus on ensuring the safety and stability of the newer Jembatan Srandakan, which serves as the primary crossing point over the Progo River.
Update May 2025: Jembatan Srandakan Lama has been completely demolished.
