Bendung Banyurejo is a historic water infrastructure site located in Tempel, Sleman Regency, intricately linked to the colonial-era Selokan Van der Wijck.
Built around 1909, this gravitational irrigation system was engineered to divert water from Selokan Van der Wijck to support local sugar plantations. Its most iconic feature in the Banyurejo area is Buk Renteng Van der Wijck, an elevated brick aqueduct that rises four meters above the ground, allowing roads to pass underneath through scenic arched tunnels.
Today, this functional cultural heritage site remains vital, providing life-giving irrigation to thousands of hectares of farmland across Sleman and Bantul while serving as a unique architectural landmark for visitors exploring Yogyakarta’s rich history.
