Up in the hills of Purworejo Regency, there’s a story that refuses to sit still: a scattered network of old colonial bunkers, called Wisata Benteng Pendem, believed to number around twenty‑eight, tucked into ridges, small valleys, and overgrown slopes.
Some have been found by villagers, some are only remembered in old family stories, and a few remain completely unlocated, as if the land itself is keeping a secret.
For history hunters, which are recognised as Cultural heritage, Purworejo offers a bit of adventure. Not every site is easy to reach, the roads are narrow and you will have to follow trails through the woods. Each bunker that emerges from the earth feels like opening a forgotten chapter of a story that hasn’t been fully written yet.
