Sipon Krasak Selokan Mataram is a brilliant subterranean engineering marvel completed in 1970 to solve a recurring natural disaster.
Spanning roughly 75 to 80 meters long, this inverted siphon runs 12 meters beneath the active bed of the Krasak River. Its path is clearly visible from above, marked by a line of massive concrete blocks stretching across the riverbed that allow water to flow freely between them while heavily protecting the pipeline below.
Built to replace older Dutch and Japanese over-river aqueducts destroyed by violent volcanic mudflows (lahar dingin), this design uses hydrostatic pressure to keep the vital irrigation current safely flowing beneath the river’s active surface.
