Padangsche Spaarbank – Padang

Tucked away in Padang’s old town in West Sumatra, right by the Batang Arau river, stands the Padangsche Spaarbank, a building that has seen more than a century of history. Built in 1908 by a local Freemason group called Loji Matahari, it was once the pride of the city, offering a safe place to save money under the slogan “Veilig Sparen” (safe saving). Back then, it wasn’t just a bank; it was a symbol of trust and modern life in colonial Padang.

The building itself is striking, with its classic European-style architecture and sturdy two floors that have survived fires, floods, and even changes in function. Over the years, it has been more than a financial institution, after Indonesia’s independence, it even served as a hotel for a while. Today, it’s recognized as one of Padang’s protected heritage sites, a reminder of how the city grew as a trading hub and how everyday people once lined up here to deposit their savings.

Currently the buildings holds a cafe-restaurant and is an amazing place to enjoy a drink or a meal.
