Mid-Century Cool: The Story Behind the Colorful Locomotive at the New Building
If you have ever caught a local commuter train or returned from an airport run via the modern South Gate (Pintu Selatan) of Stasiun Yogyakarta, you couldn’t possibly miss the bright green-and-yellow train parked right outside.
It looks like a retro toy model brought to life, but it is actually a real piece of Indonesian transit history: the Lokomotif D301 22. Unveiled as a public monument by the national railway provider, KAI, this diesel-hydraulic workhorse was built in Germany by Fried Krupp and shipped to Indonesia back in 1962. Back in the day, these agile little switchers were the unsung heroes of the rails, shuffling passenger carriages around and pulling cargo across Madura and Jakarta.
Today, it has traded its hardworking railway yard days for a well-deserved retirement as the ultimate selfie backdrop. Placed perfectly against the bustling backdrop of the new station wing, its popping vintage colors offer a fantastic contrast to the high-tech, fast-paced commuter hub around it.
