Cerobong Asap Pabrik Genteng Beran is a hidden 12-meter brick chimney tucked away in the hills of Margodadi, Sleman Regency.
Built in 1964 by a Chinese immigrant, this structure belonged to a highly modern tile factory. Unlike traditional kilns, it used an advanced diesel compressor system to fire thousands of tiles at once, briefly becoming the village’s economic heartbeat. However, its engines fell permanently silent just a year later during Indonesia’s intense 1965 political upheaval. Abandoned overnight, the site was later used by locals as a traditional Javanese theater pavilion.
Today, this 60-year-old chimney stands as a beautiful, forgotten monument, a silent witness to industrial triumph and sudden history.
