If you ever find yourself cruising down Jalan Nanggulan Mendut in Banjarharjo, keep your eyes peeled for a beautiful, nameless aqueduct cutting through the lush landscape.
Locally known as a Talang Air, this striking water bridge looks like a piece of European history dropped into rural Yogyakarta, and that is because it is! This aqueduct is a vital link in the Kalibawang Irrigation System, engineered by the Dutch back in 1918. Built without modern pumps, it uses pure gravity to channel water from the Progo River across tricky hills and valleys. While it underwent major upgrades in 1946 and 1976 to keep up with modern farming, the clever colonial foundations still stand strong today, quietly watering over 7,000 hectares of rice fields.
It has no signs or nameplates, making it a true hidden gem for history buffs and photographers alike! It is accessible only to pedestrians.
