The Forgotten Schoolmaster’s House in Kulon Progo
Right next to the beautifully restored SD Negeri Butuh, stands a striking contrast: an old, weathered house that looks like a ghost from the past.
This is the original 1916 Rumah Dinas, the official residence built for the school’s headmaster over a century ago. Sadly, it is currently in pretty bad shape and completely vacant. But don’t let the peeling paint fool you: because it shares the same compound and history as the school, this house is legally protected under the same Cagar Budaya heritage umbrella! It cannot be torn down, and heritage lovers hope it will one day be restored into a school library or community space.
It is a bittersweet but fascinating reminder of early 20th-century school life.
