Kolam Retensi Karangwuni in Kulon Progo is a clever mix of smart water management and a chill community hangout.
Completed in late 2023, this massive 3.2-hectare basin acts like a giant structural sponge. It holds up to 127,000 cubic meters of water to shield Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) and local villages from heavy floods. By regulating five local streams and using high-tech pumps, it keeps the region safe while keeping nearby rice fields fertile. When it isn’t busy fighting floods, the basin transforms into a beautiful public space.
