Benteng Pendem is a 19th-century Dutch fortress in Cilacap, Central Java, originally named “Kustbatterij op de Landtong te Tjilatjap”.
Built strategically near the Indian Ocean to protect colonial interests, it was abandoned after World War II. Over time, nature reclaimed the structure, leaving it partially buried under sand and vegetation, a transformation that earned the fort its Javanese name, which translates to “buried fortress”.
Today, this historical site is partially restored and open to the public. Visitors can explore its dark corridors and watchtowers, experiencing a tangible reminder of Cilacap’s layered military history.
