Benteng Vredeburg (Vredeburg Fort) is a colonial fort built in 1760, located on Malioboro Street and close to Yogyakarta Zero Kilometer Point. This fort is located in front of the Agung Building and the Sultanate of Yogyakarta Palace, and has a watchtower in each corner. This fort was originally intended to maintain the security of the palace, but was actually also used to monitor and intimidate the activities of the sultan and his people. Now, this fort functions as a museum displaying dioramas about the history of the Indonesian people’s struggle against colonialism. Vredeburg Fort is an interesting and educational historical tourist spot in the city of Yogyakarta.
