Candi Ngawen

Candi Ngawen (Ngawen Temple) is a remarkable Buddhist temple located approximately 5 km north of Candi Mendut, in the village of Ngawen, Muntilan, Magelang Regency, Central Java. This temple complex, which dates back to the 8th or 9th century during the era of the Sailendra dynasty, consists of five small temples, two of which are adorned with unique lion statues at their corners. The presence of Kinnara and Kinnari carvings, celestial beings half-human and half-bird, along with the depiction of the eternal tree Kalpataru, adds to the temple’s rich iconography. The site has been the focus of research since the early 20th century and continues to be a place of historical significance and beauty, surrounded by lush rice fields that enhance its serene atmosphere.
