Gunung Merapi (Mount Merapi) is an active volcano located on the border between the provinces of Central Java and the Special Region of Yogyakarta. This mountain is the most active volcano in Indonesia and has erupted regularly since 1548. Mount Merapi has a height of 2,911 meters and its steep slopes are covered with dense vegetation at the bottom. This mountain often emits hot clouds and volcanic ash which can endanger residents around it. One of the major eruptions occurred in 1006 and spread ash throughout Central Java. Other large eruptions occurred in 1786, 1822, 1872, 1930, 1976, 2010, and the 2023 eruption. Also in 2024 the volcano is still very active. The volcano is closely monitored from several observation posts, such as Pos Pengamatan Gunung Merapi Babadan. Mount Merapi is about 28 km from the city of Yogyakarta.
