Gunung Merapi Eruption (2023)

Gunung Merapi (Mount Merapi) is one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia, located on the island of Java. This mountain often erupts by emitting hot clouds and a mixture of rock, lava and gas that slides down its slopes. On March 11 2023, Mount Merapi erupted again, producing hot clouds as high as 100 meters and lava flows reaching a distance of seven kilometers from the peak. This eruption caused the closure of tourism and mining activities around the mountain. No casualties were reported, but several villages were covered in volcanic ash. This eruption is the largest eruption since November 2020, when the mountain’s status was raised to level two highest. The volcano is closely monitored from several observation posts, such as Pos Pengamatan Gunung Merapi Babadan. The volcano is still very active and erupted in January 2024 several times, where hot clouds of ash rolled down the slopes.
